Privacy Policy

Last updated

FLYPEDIA is a reference website with no accounts, no advertising and no analytics. This policy describes what that means in practice, what is stored on your device, and what rights you have under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Summary

FLYPEDIA sets one cookie, which records whether you are reading the English or the French edition. It uses no others. It does not run analytics, advertising, tracking or social media embeds. It has no user accounts, no registration, no newsletter and no comment system. It does not sell or share personal data, and it does not build profiles of readers.

The settings you choose (your language, your units, and the entries you save) are stored in your own browser and are not transmitted to the site. There is no server-side feature that receives them.

The sections below set this out in full, including the one area not under the project's direct control: the hosting provider's server logs.

Who is responsible for your data

The data controller for the purposes of the GDPR is: TO BE COMPLETED

Contact for data protection enquiries: randgard45@gmail.com

No data protection officer has been appointed. TO BE COMPLETED if this changes.

Information stored on your device

FLYPEDIA stores a small amount of information in your browser's local and session storage. This stays on your device. It is not sent to the site, is not readable by the project, and is not shared with anyone.

  • Saved entries, the entries you choose to keep, so that your list survives between visits. Stored in local storage.
  • Display preferences: your chosen measurement units, currency and related interface settings, together with a note of any interface prompt you have dismissed. Stored in local storage.
  • Reading position: which part of a long entry you had reached, so that switching language returns you to the same passage rather than to the top of the page. Stored in session storage and discarded when the browser session ends.
  • Navigation trail: the route you took through the site, used for in-page back navigation. Stored in session storage and discarded when the browser session ends.

You can erase all of it at any time by clearing site data for this website in your browser settings. Nothing is retained elsewhere, so no request to the project is required and none would be effective.

This storage is used only to deliver features you have actively chosen or that are necessary for the page to behave correctly. It is not used to recognise you, to track you across sites, or to measure your behaviour.

Cookies and tracking

FLYPEDIA sets a single cookie, named NEXT_LOCALE. It is set by the internationalisation framework the site is built with, and it records nothing but your choice of edition, the two-letter value "en" or "fr", so that the site can keep showing you the language you chose.

It contains no identifier of any kind, is restricted to this site, is not readable by other sites, and no expiry is set on it, so your browser discards it when the browsing session ends. It is not used to recognise you, to measure your behaviour or to track you anywhere.

There are no other cookies. No analytics cookies, no advertising identifiers, no tracking pixels, no fingerprinting, and no third-party cookies of any kind.

A cookie that exists solely to remember a preference the reader has actively expressed is treated as strictly necessary for a service they explicitly requested, and no consent banner is shown for it. The device storage described in the previous section is on the same footing. If FLYPEDIA ever introduces storage or a cookie that falls outside that (anything measuring, identifying or following readers) a proper consent mechanism will be implemented first, and this policy will be updated before it is deployed, not afterwards.

Third-party services and content

FLYPEDIA does not embed third-party content. Specifically, it does not load external fonts, external images, maps, videos, social media widgets, comment systems, advertising networks, analytics services or error-monitoring services at the time you view a page.

Typefaces are compiled into the site during the build and served from its own domain, so viewing a page does not cause a request to a font provider. Photographs and illustrations are served from the site's own domain, not from an external image host.

The site sends a Content Security Policy instructing your browser to load scripts, styles, images, fonts and network connections only from the site's own origin, and to refuse to be embedded in a frame on another site. This is a technical restriction, not merely a statement of intent.

The exception is links. Reference links point to external websites, archives, authorities, manufacturers, museums and publications. Following one takes you to a site governed by its own privacy policy, over which FLYPEDIA has no control.

Information processed when you visit

Like any website, FLYPEDIA is delivered by a hosting provider, and that provider's servers necessarily receive the technical information required to send a page to you. This typically includes your IP address, the time of the request, the page requested, and information your browser sends such as its user agent.

An IP address can constitute personal data under the GDPR. This information is processed by the hosting provider in order to deliver the website and to maintain its security and availability.

Hosting provider: Vercel Inc., 440 N Barranca Avenue #4133, Covina, CA 91723, United States. Data protection contact: privacy@vercel.com

Retention period for server logs: Vercel does not publish a fixed retention period for request logs in its public documentation. TO BE COMPLETED once confirmed with the provider.

The site is served from Vercel’s global network, so the server that answers your request may be outside your own country. FLYPEDIA does not operate its own separate visitor logging, and does not combine server log information with anything else.

Information you send to us

FLYPEDIA has no contact form, no registration and no comment system, so it collects nothing from you unless you deliberately send it.

If you contact the project (to report a correction, raise a copyright concern or exercise a data protection right) the message and the address you sent it from will be processed in order to deal with it. Please include only what is needed; there is no reason to send sensitive personal information to an aviation encyclopedia.

Correspondence is kept only for as long as reasonably necessary to handle the matter and to keep a record of how an editorial or copyright issue was resolved, or for longer where a legal obligation requires it.

Legal bases for processing

Where the GDPR applies, processing is carried out on the following bases:

  • Delivering the website and keeping it secure and available, including the hosting provider's processing of technical connection data, legitimate interests (Article 6(1)(f)): operating and protecting the service you requested.
  • Handling correspondence you choose to send, legitimate interests (Article 6(1)(f)): responding to an enquiry you initiated. Where your message is a request to exercise a data protection right, processing it is a legal obligation (Article 6(1)(c)).
  • Meeting legal, regulatory or record-keeping obligations, legal obligation (Article 6(1)(c)).

The storage on your own device is not listed here because it is not transmitted to or processed by the project. It is covered instead by the rules on storing information on a user's device, and is limited to functionality you have explicitly requested.

Data minimisation

FLYPEDIA is built to need as little personal information as possible. There are no accounts because the site has no feature that requires one; saved entries live on your device for the same reason. No information is collected for marketing, profiling or resale, and none is requested that is not necessary for the purpose it serves.

Recipients and transfers

Personal data is not sold, rented, or shared for advertising. The only routine recipient is the hosting provider, acting as a processor in order to deliver the site: Vercel Inc., 440 N Barranca Avenue #4133, Covina, CA 91723, United States. Data protection contact: privacy@vercel.com

Information may be disclosed where required by law, or where necessary to establish, exercise or defend a legal claim.

Vercel Inc. is established in the United States, so delivering this site involves a transfer of technical connection data outside the European Economic Area. Vercel states that it relies on the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses for such transfers, together with the UK International Data Transfer Addendum where UK data is involved.

Retention

Information on your device remains until you clear it; session storage is discarded when you close the browser session.

Server log retention is set by the hosting provider. Vercel does not publish a fixed period for request logs. TO BE COMPLETED once confirmed with the provider.

Correspondence is retained only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purpose for which it was sent, or for as long as required by law.

Your rights

If you are in the European Economic Area, the GDPR gives you the following rights in respect of personal data relating to you:

  • access: to obtain confirmation of whether your data is processed, and a copy of it
  • rectification: to have inaccurate data corrected
  • erasure: to have data deleted in the circumstances the law provides
  • restriction: to limit how data is processed in certain circumstances
  • objection: to object to processing carried out on the basis of legitimate interests
  • portability, to receive certain data in a portable format, where applicable
  • withdrawal of consent: where processing is based on consent, to withdraw it at any time, without affecting processing already carried out
  • to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority

To exercise any of these rights, contact: randgard45@gmail.com

In practice, the project holds very little that could identify you. The most likely subject of such a request is correspondence you have sent.

You may complain to the supervisory authority in the EU or EEA country where you live or work, or where you believe the issue arose. In France this is the Commission nationale de l'informatique et des libertés (CNIL).

Security

FLYPEDIA applies reasonable technical measures appropriate to a site of its nature. Pages are served over an encrypted connection. The site sends a Content Security Policy restricting what a browser may load, declines to be embedded in frames on other sites, instructs browsers not to infer file types, limits the referrer information sent to external sites, and denies access to camera, microphone and location.

The site has no login, so there are no reader credentials to compromise, and it holds no reader database.

No method of transmission or storage over the internet can be guaranteed completely secure, and no absolute guarantee of security is given. If a personal data breach occurs that is likely to result in a risk to your rights and freedoms, it will be handled in accordance with the notification obligations the GDPR imposes.

Children

FLYPEDIA is a general-audience reference work, suitable for school and general educational use. It is not directed at children specifically, and it does not knowingly collect personal data from anyone, including children. Because there are no accounts and no forms, no age information is requested or held.

Changes to this policy

This policy will be updated when the site changes in a way that affects it. The date at the top of this page records the most recent revision. Where a change is significant (in particular, any introduction of analytics, cookies or third-party content) this policy will be updated before that change goes live.
